Antiques: Visitors are reminded that the export of antiques such as Buddha images and other artefacts is strictly prohibited. Any antique purchased in another country and brought into Myanmar must be declared at customs upon arrival to facilitate the departure process.

Lacquerware: This beautifully crafted product comes in many decorative and utilitarian forms, shapes, and colours. Older pieces can be particularly attractive.

Jewellery: Generally not up to international standards of design and workmanship, Myanmar jewellery can be unusual and attractive. Shoppers must carefully check that the gold to make sure that it is not merely gold plated silver. All gem and jewellery purchases need to be made through a government-authorised dealer, who must issue an official receipt, which is required for export of such items. The exportation of loose gemstones and silver also require an official certificate from the vendor. Be sure they appear on the customs declaration form.

Teakwood Furniture: Tempting and beautiful pieces to ship home are made by craftsmen and can be made to order. It is best to employ the advice of a local resident and check the regulations in the country to which the piece will be shipped before making a serious purchase decision.

Longyi: The men’s traditional longyi is a much more comfortable alternative to tight jeans or trousers, and makes for an interesting gift.

Stone Carvings: Some lovely pieces are available for the house or garden, but they must be shipped home, which requires the advice of a local person.

Kalaga Embroidered Tapestries: These beautifully ornate creations make magnificent wall decorations when suitably framed. Quality greatly varies, and shoppers are advised to look around. Older pieces tend to look more aesthetic.

Traditional Puppets: Puppetry is a long-respected tradition, and there is a wide variety of puppets and marionettes on sale. They make attractive decorations and unusual gifts.

Bamboo products: A wide range of articles are for sale, but make sure the bamboo is properly matured, as new green bamboo can split or house insects that feed on the dried sap.

Leather Crafts: Some very attractive items from small purses to large hard-wearing bags which last for years are available.

Folk Dolls: Many different varieties are available reflecting the numerous ethnic groups in Myanmar, and they make lovely gifts or souvenirs.
