Do’s & Don’ts
Religion
Always dress neatly and conservatively when visiting any religious building, and never climb on any religious figure or structure. Strictly observe any rules on photography or filming.
Social
A handshake is the traditional greeting for men and women, irrespective of age or seniority. A good friend may clasp both hands of the other as a gesture of affection. Hugging and backslapping are taboo, as are open displays of affection. Slurping food, however, is a recognised sign of enjoyment
Chinese surnames precede the given names, and it is not appropriate to address Chinese people by their given name. The Chinese have a high regard for older people, and an extra show of courtesy and the visible acknowledgement of their presence reflects well on you.
